Vitamin D and ED Introduction

Supporting studies

One study found that about 50 percent of the men (who were involved in said study) had some sort of vitamin D and ED deficiency. Almost none had nearly perfect levels of it. Men with arteriogenic ED (the more severe cases of ED) were found to have about 24 percent lower vitamin D levels than men with the more mild cases of erectile dysfunction.

The study concluded that men with low levels of vitamin face an increased risk of endothelial dysfunction, hence risking erectile dysfunction. Arteriogenic disease is not the only condition that sees its patients with low vitamin D and ED levels. ED patients also commonly have low levels of the vitamin. For this reason, vitamin D and ED(or lack thereof) may have a big role in endothelial dysfunction, and hence erectile dysfunction.

What if Vitamin D levels are Low?

A person with less than sufficient vitamin D levels risks stimulating a rapid production of superoxide ions (which are free radicals). Superoxide ions use up the body’s store of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential in the proper functioning of blood vessels.

It ensures the blood vessels are relaxed, and as a result of this relaxation, the flow of blood is increased. Increased (or normal) blood flow is what allows a man to sustain an erection.

The less nitric oxide a man has in his blood, the higher the risk of ED since the blood vessels won’t be allowed to relax and hence the blood might not flow properly or fast enough.
